Homecoming Heros

When England won the World Cup in 1966, Bobby and Jackie Charlton were given a civic reception by their hometown of Ashington in Northumberland. Local Evening Chronical reporter, Vince Gledhill, was on the scene to cover the event, and filmed the open top car take the brothers from their family home, past thousands of well wishers, to the town hall. Here Cameron Hawkes talks to Vince about that very special day, and the unique connection between mining communities and football.
